Approach to Leadership

Since 2017, I have worked as the Head of Special Collections at the University of Arkansas, where I lead a team of approximately 14 faculty and staff to facilitate the stewardship and use of our over 19,000 linear feet of collection materials. I am particularly interested in leadership development in academic libraries, and specifically, providing those who work with me with informal opportunities to apply learned skills to help move our department forward. Both my scholarship and my daily practice emphasize this non-hierarchical approach to leadership. In 2019, ACRL will be publishing my book Developing the Next Generation of Library Leaders, which draws on the experiences of those administrators in assistant dean and similar roles to better understand their journeys into leadership positions, and the opportunities they provide the next generation to foster leadership skill development. This research feeds into my practice as a leader, and I seek opportunities for my own team to participate in leadership and management skill development, whether through on-campus trainings, readings, podcasts, or blog posts, we all have something to learn.
