For the Saturday morning session, I went to hear about planning for an archives move. Dan Dilandro, Theresa Altieri and Leslie Simons shared their tips for planning and executing a successful move:
1. Develop a reverse timeline to ensure deadlines are met.
2. Incorporate staff engagement and buy-in into the moving process.
3. Develop a budget.
4. Plan rewards and praise for staff participation and goals met.
5. Be prepared to be unprepared.
6. Create specific staff assignments and tasks, incorporating them into annual performance evaluations, where appropriate.
7. Communication the phases of your move to all stakeholders: the public, staff and donors.
I was interested that most moves the speakers described were reactive to outside decisions. I’m interested to learn more about strategically planned moves as the result of space and collection growth planning.
