Session 303: Access to Funds Means Access to Archives: How Raising Money Works

Thinking about how what we’re doing in archives connects with the larger institutional mission was my big take-away from this morning’s session. Benjamin Yousey-Hindes a Development Officer from Yale encouraged us to consider:

Know why you matter and to whom
Know what your money needs are and what possible opportunities are out there
What are you achieving

I was encouraged by his premise that Development Officers can be incredible sources of support and ideas for those of us in archives and special collections. Most importantly, we must empower Development Officers to be our advocates and work with them to garner support. By sharing information access to us as staff and the collections, as well as enthusiasm ensure a rewarding and productive relationship.

He also stated that donors want to feel that their gift has an impact not just on your department but a more lasting impact on the library and university, or parent organization.

What strategies do you currently use to demonstrate impact to donors?
